Dr.'s Chemical peeling
(AHA , BHA , TCA)

What is Chemical Peeling ?

Chemical Peeling is exactly what it says - peeling of the skin using a chemical. A chemical peel removes the outer layers of the skin. This freshens the skin, removes some sunspots and rough scaly patches, and reduces freckles and irregular pigmentation.

It also reduces fine wrinkles. There is some evidence that it may reduce the risk of skin cancer. It is safest and most effective on the face. Hands can be peeled but the risk of scarring is higher and the results less predictable.

What are the chemicals used in chemical peeling and in what concentrations ?

Trichloroacetic acid (TCA 10% - 70%), hydroxy acid (such as glycolic acid GA 20% - 70%), Salicylic (beta hydroxy) acid, are the most commonly used agents.

What are the skin problems where chemical peeling is helpful ?

Acne and superficial scars as a result of acne. Melasma, pigmentation, skin discoloration like pigmentation due to sun exposure, pregnancy, birth control pills, drug reaction, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation i.e. pigmentation as a result of a healing skin disease or infection.

Freckles and lentigenes, Fine wrinkles, Dilated pores, Sun damage, Premature aging uneven skin tone and texture.

How is chemical peeling performed ?

After properly studying the skin type and its sensitivity, the dermatosurgeon decides on the type of peeling agent or agents and their concentration. The selection of the chemical agent also depends on the extent and depth of skin damage.

The skin is first cleaned with soap water to remove make up and excess oil. The peeling agent is then applied gently onto the lesion or on the full face till the 'end point' is achieved. During or shortly after the procedure, the patient might experience warmth or stinging sensation for a few minutes.

What happens after chemical peeling ?

After a superficial peel, redness appears and there is peeling of skin over three to seven days.

What should be avoided before and after chemical peeling ?

You must be careful not to expose the skin to sunlight before and after the peeling, and to a sunscreen stronger than SPF 15.
Please use a sunscreen stronger then SPF 15 if you are outside for a long time in summer time.
Your skin might be dry and scaly after the peeling, so please moisturize your skin. And also you might have scabs partially.
Please avoid shaving your face or strong stimulation for 4, 5 days before and after the peeling.
In the case you use hydroquinone, please try it on your neck for 2 days before you use it on your face, and make sure that you do not have an allergy reaction such as redness or itchiness.
Please do not use hydroquinone for 2, 3 days right after the peeling.
Please do not take a peeling 3, 4 weeks before you have a opportunity you expose your skin to sunlight for a long time such as going to a beach.

How much, and how fast your skin improves depend on individuals.
